Emotional Care
Seniors’ Emotional Care/Support What is seniors’ emotional care? When you place your loved one in a facility, there are two basic kinds of care that the loved one will require. The first is physical care, which the facility operator is responsible for. Examples of this type of care include providing the resident with two or three meals a day, personal care, a clean place to live and activities for the loved one. The second type of care needed is the resident’s emotional care, such as helping the elderly alleviate loneliness and feelings of abandonment and isolation, which sometimes cause depression. In addition, there is also the aspect of mental care for the elderly, which is commonly known as preserving his or her dignity. All of these elements are part of the resident’s emotional care. The person expected to provide this type of care is the family member. Facility operators refer to this type of care as “someone to sit with them.” Family members call it one-on-one visitation time. It has been my experience working in the industry for many years that seniors who receive emotional care are much happier, they eat better, they socialize more and they are more likely to participate in group activities. Their overall health and well-being is better because they receive the emotional care and support that they need. These days, however, spending adequate time with an elderly loved one is more difficult. Many family members live far from their loved ones in care facilities, and others are not able to visit as often as they would like because they are busy with other commitments. Those who cannot be with their loved one regularly worry about the well-being of the elderly family member due to their absence. That is where Full Spectrum Senior Services comes in.
